About Steve Love

Born 1957, I am a native of Sheffield. After Cambridge University where I took a First in Natural Sciences, rowed, ran a folk club and was a volunteer fire marshal in the fire strike, I joined the police in 1978 as a Constable.

I spent fourteen eventful years with the Cambridgeshire Constabulary, reaching the rank of Chief Inspector and on the way serving in Uniform, CID, Traffic Duties, as an Inspector covering Alconbury and Molesworth, Force Crime Prevention Officer, and Deputy Divisional Commander for Cambridge City Division.

During this time I also spent two years on the staff of Her Majesty's Inspector of Constabulary and six months on a "job swap" at Bethnal Green in London, where my particular focus was the running of major operations and public order.

In 1992 I transferred on promotion to Superintendent in the Merseyside Police and there spent eight years, firstly as Area Commander for Birkenhead, then as Head of Community Relations and later as Head of Strategic Planning

In 2000 I attended the Strategic Command Course at the Police College, and took a Certificate in Applied Criminology at Cambridge University, then joined the Thames Valley Police on promotion to Assistant Chief Constable (Territorial Policing).

This placed me in charge of ten police divisions, plus all the major pre-planned and spontaneous major operations, including animal liberation attacks, public disorder, royal events, sporting events and a visit of President Bush.

In 2003, I was appointed Deputy Chief Constable of the Humberside Police, in charge of Personnel, Corporate Development, Professional Standards and Performance.

I was appointed Chief Constable and Chief Executive of the Ministry of Defence Police and Guarding Agency in May 2005 . My current priorities in that role are to raise the operational preparedness of the Force ("match-fitness"), promote closer working of MoD Police and MGS Guards, work with the Service Police, increase the focus on crime that damages the defence capability, and develop our contribution to the MoD's post-conflict reconstruction overseas.

I am a member of the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) and a Fellow of the Security Institute.

I am married to Hilary, who is a train-driver at Colchester Zoo, with four children aged seventeen to twenty-three, have moved to Braintree to be close to my Headquarters at Wethersfield in Essex, and on the infrequent occasions when I get any spare time, spend it exploring Essex, reading military history and playing the double bass in a blues band.

We are always delighted to host visitors at our Headquarters in Wethersfield, show people around, demonstrate what we do and discuss how we can meet customer needs. Where possible I host these visits myself - if you would like to come and see us, please contact our Centre Office on 01371 854316
