The soldiers marched onto the parade ground at Uniacke Barracks in front of thousands of their relatives and friends on Thursday 13 August 2009.

The parade of seventeen-year-old students, who joined the college in Penny Pot Lane in September last year, was only exceeded in size by the Trooping of the Colour held in London.

Major General G W Berragan, who is the Director General of Army Recruiting and Training, inspected the students, who come from all over the UK, and took the salute when they graduated from the college watched by the Commandant, Lieutenant Colonel Steve O'Cock, and members of staff.

Lieutenant ColonelĀ O'Cock said:

"The Junior Soldiers of Cambrai, Peninsula and Waterloo companies are a testament to the very best of this nation's young people and I have no doubt that they are now fully prepared 'to do the right thing on a difficult day'.

"They follow in the illustrious footsteps of the thousands of soldiers who have previously passed out from the Army Foundation College and forged a great career in the British Army.

"They go on to begin their specialist training having been the recipients of the best initial training regime that the British Army has to offer. They have all been stretched both physically and mentally and will leave with a tremendous feeling of achievement. The Junior Soldiers can and should feel proud of themselves."

The parade, which began with a military parachute drop by the famous Red Devils parachute team, was led by the college's top student, Junior Regimental Sergeant Major Aaron Marsh from Telford, Shropshire, who gave the commands and escorted the Reviewing Officer.

The Junior Soldiers, who have undergone a 12-month course in a unique combination of military skills and vocational qualifications, will now receive specialist Phase 2 training in their chosen trade or specialism.

They have had the opportunity to achieve a National Vocational Qualification Level 2 or 3 in Information Technology and the six Key Skills at Level 2 or 3 leading to the award of the Foundation Modern Apprenticeship.

Many have also achieved Duke of Edinburgh awards and first aid qualifications from St John Ambulance.

Leadership and team-building skills are developed by the college on a comprehensive adventure training package. The students are given the opportunity to sample a wide variety of sports promoting fitness and agility.

The Junior Soldiers have just returned from their two-week camp in Barry Buddon where they practised their military skills and fieldcraft, culminating in a final exercise.
