Terms of use for Crown copyright material

Details regarding use of Crown copy material

Where an MOD Crown copyright licence is required, you may request one from the Directorate of Intellectual Property Rights (DIPR). DIPR has sole responsibility within MoD to grant permission for all external use or reproduction of Crown copyright material, including for example photographs, film footage, badges, text and drawings.

Licences are granted by the Crown copyright administrator who may be contacted by following the link opposite.

Reproduction licences are subject to fees. Such fees may be offset by prior agreement with MOD if MOD receives equal or greater value in kind as a result of the use of the images.

The fees for reproduction are:

Photographs:

£50 for the first 2 images,

£50 for each additional image thereafter.

Different rates may apply depending on the purpose for which the photograph is to be used. Please contact the Crown copyright administrator for details.

Note that MOD photographs may be viewed at the Defence Image Database by following the Related page opposite.

It must be noted that not all photos on the Defence Image Database may be licensed. We will not licence photos that feature clearly recognisable individuals, any children, or any dead or wounded individuals, without the express permission of the individuals concerned.

Film footage: £12 to £60 per second of footage used, depending on the purpose for which the footage is used.

All film licences are subject to a 30 second minimum charge.
